When you register your pet’s BlanketID tag, you know you’ve done all you can to help your friend to be returned home to you as fast as possible if they ever get lost.
The lovely folks who created BlanketID, Martin and Cathy Hubbard, had visited Vancouver Island many times dating back to 1980. After selling their successful advertising and marketing business in London's bustling West End, a desire to escape the busy city life called Martin and Cathy back to Vancouver Island which they have now called home since 2001.
Settled into their new life, they decided to adopt an older rescue cat, and a very frightened ‘Milly’ found her forever home after eight months of waiting. As Milly began to get comfortable with her new life and her loving servants, Cathy and Martin adopted a second rescue cat called Poppet so that Milly would have a playmate.
In the process of finding their pets, Martin and Cathy realized that so many cats and dogs were in the adoption system simply because they had been found with no up to date identification and no one could find their owners. These distressed “family members” were now just lost in the system.
The statistics were stunning; some 94% of cats and 45% of dogs brought to the pound either have no ID, or are wearing out of date ID. Many pets carry out of date phone numbers, tags with unreadable details or have faded tattoos and old microchip details. From this sad state of affairs, the idea for BlanketID tags was born and they created a system that would truly help to get our best friends home to the safety of their families as quickly as possible.
After much research, they designed a system that links your pet’s BlanketID tag number to a web site where you can store all of the important details and a photo of your pet.
At www.blanketid.com you are able to enter all of your pet’s details, special markings, age, weight, breed, and upload a picture of them. You can include any special diets or medications they may need or any allergies they may have (If the pound finds your pet and they need regular medication they need to know!). Should your pet's information change, or should you move, it’s simple to log into your account and change your details – you never need to buy another tag.
Now, if your pet gets found, anyone can access your pet’s details, your contact information, emergency contacts, medical history, allergy information, and anything else that you want them to know - 24 hours a day.
Even better, BlanketID works like a neighbourhood watch for pets in that if you report your pet missing, a blanket broadcast email message is immediately sent out to local SPCA, Animal Hospitals, Shelters, Veterinary Offices, DogAboutTown.ca, and all other local BlanketID members. With so many people quickly made aware that your pet is missing, the chances of your best friend being returned home sooner are very much increased. You can also print your own “Lost Pet” poster straight from the web site for fast neighbourhood awareness.
Every BlanketID tag purchased here helps animals in need on Vancouver Island as more than 20% of profits are donated to a special “Blanket Fund” to help injured and homeless animals. BlanketID is available Canada-wide, and when funds are raised in a particular province, the funds raised in that province will help local animals in need in that province.
"Registering your best friend with a BlanketID tag means that you’re more likely to have them back home quickly if they get lost. You’re also helping those pets that are homeless or hurt and aren’t lucky enough to share a family life yet. Let’s all help together." - Martin & Cathy
