Is your dog legal? In 2011 licencing fees for the City of Victoria increased a BIG 20% while fines for your dog not wearing an up to date tag on their collar increased a whopping 100%!
As well, the grace period for purchasing a cheaper tag decreased by one month. Previously you could purchase your tags up to the end of March at the reduced price. Now you only have until the 28th of February to take advantage of saving $20. per tag.
You could be fined "$100.per day for non-compliance" on the spot.

City of VICTORIA:
When you purchase your licence between Jan 01 and Feb 28 you can save $20.
January 01 to February 28 Fees:
Male - $40
Male - Neutered - $30
Female - $40
Female - Spayed - $30
March 01 to December 31 Fees:
Male - $60
Male - Neutered - $50
Female - $60
Female - Spayed - $50
District of OAK BAY:
When you purchase your licence between January 1st and 31st, you can save $5.

Licence Rules and Regulations every responsible dog person needs to know (as noted by the Victoria Animal Control Services):
1. "All dogs over the age of four (4) months are required to be licensed regardless of any circumstance or reason. Licences are valid for a calendar year and must be renewed yearly. Licence regulations are STRICTLY ENFORCED.
2. LOST or STOLEN tages can be REPLACED for $5.00 - Take your original licence form to a vendor to prove you previously purchased a licence or the vendor can contact Victoria Animal Control Services to confirm your licence status.
3. LICENCES &/or TAGS are NOT TRANSFERABLE - If you obtain a new dog you must obtain a new licence for it. Licences cannot be transferred from owner to owner or from dog to dog.
4. TAGS can be EXCHANGED - If you have recently moved to the City of Victoria or Oak Bay and possess a current year licence from any municipality anywhere in Canada you can surrender your current licence tag in exchange for a City of Victoria or Oak Bay licence tag for no charge. If your out-of-town tag is not date stamped, proof of purchase date is required.
5. If your dog has been SPAYED or NEUTERED in the preceding 12 months, your licence is free of charge (only one free licence per spay or neuter). Proof of procedure (receipt from Veterinarian) is mandatory.
6. If your dog is a CERTIFIED GUIDE or ASSISTANCE DOG, your licence is free of charge. Proof of certification may be required if status is not obvious."
