Many common foods that we cook with every day are not good for our furry friends, some of them fatal, while others cause terrible side effects. Every year many of our fur friends suffer because us humans are not careful enough to keep these foods out of reach of our curious and hungry friends.

“Xylitol
Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in products such as gum, candy, mints, toothpaste, and mouthwash. Xylitol is harmful to dogs because it causes a sudden release of insulin in the body that leads to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Xylitol can also cause liver damage in dogs. Within 30 minutes after eating, the dog may vomit, be lethargic (tired), and/or be uncoordinated. However, some signs of toxicity can also be delayed for hours or even for a few days. Xylitol toxicity in dogs can be fatal if untreated. It is unknown whether xylitol is toxic to cats.

Chocolate, Coffee, and Caffeine
Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that is toxic to dogs in large enough quantities. Chocolate also contains caffeine, which is found in coffee, tea, and certain soft drinks. Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine and caffeine. For example, dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain more of these compounds than milk chocolate does, so a dog would need to eat more milk chocolate in order to become ill. However, even a few ounces of chocolate can be enough to cause illness in a small dog, so no amount or type of chocolate should be considered “safe” for a dog to eat. Chocolate toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid or irregular heart rate, restlessness, muscle tremors, and seizures. Death can occur within 24 hours of ingestion.

Grapes and Raisins
Grapes and Raisins can cause acute (sudden) kidney failure in cats and dogs. It is unknown what the toxic agent is in these fruits. However, clinical signs can occur within 24 hours of eating and include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy (tiredness). Other signs of illness relate to the eventual shutdown of kidney functioning.

Avocados
The Avocado tree leaves, pits, fruit, and plant bark are likely all toxic. Clinical signs in dogs and cats include vomiting and diarrhea.

Garlic and Onions
Garlic and Onions contain chemicals that damage red blood cells in cats and dogs. Affected red blood cells can rupture or lose their ability to carry oxygen effectively. Cooking these foods does not reduce their potential toxicity. Fresh, cooked, and/or powdered garlic and/or onions are commonly found in baby food, which is sometimes given to animals when they are sick, so be sure to read food labels carefully.

Macadamia Nuts
Macadamia Nuts are common in candies and chocolates. The mechanism of macadamia nut toxicity is not well understood, but clinical signs in dogs include depression, weakness, vomiting, tremors, joint pain, and pale gums. Clinical signs can occur within 12 hours after eating. In some cases, signs can resolve without treatment in 24 to 48 hours, however, patient monitoring is strongly recommended.” – VetStreet.com

Nobody wants their best fur friend to suffer like this, so make sure that none of these foods are left around where your dog or cat might accidentally gain access to them.

You will love these unique, one of a kind pendants that Angela can make for you just from a picture of your favourite fur friend, or anything else you’d like in a unique pendant.

Angela Zissoff & her husband, Chris Goodman were both born and educated in Toronto, Ontario. Angela studied Printing Technology and Graphic Design at George Brown College and later attended University of Toronto in the Fine Arts Studio Program. Chris graduated from Ontario College of Art during that time.

When Angela and Chris were married, Chris had already been working in the family business, The Russell C. Goodman Stained Glass Studio, for 20 years. As soon as they were married, Angela became a stained glass apprentice with Chris and his father, Russell.

Chris & Angela continue the 58 year old family guild today which has been renamed the Goodman Zissoff Stained Glass Studio and their commissioned works still take them across the country, creating works for various venues such as residential, institutional, religious, and government.

Fused glass pendants have also become a passion. Working with miniature size elements; stacking, gluing, and fusing, has become a nice contrast to the larger scale Chris & Angela are used to. There is still a strong desire to create landscape imagery or symbols that are meaningful in the pendants although the artist’s whims are revealed in the more abstract pieces.

GZ Pendants Pendants is an offshoot of Goodman Zissoff Studio where Angela and her husband work with fusible glass for both their large panels and their unique pendants.

All imagery is hand painted and fired in the glass permanently and then the pendants are strung with a black, nylon, adjustable cord. Simply by sliding each knot forward or back, this enables the pendant to be worn like a choker or longer.

To see more beautiful images and read more go to Angela’s page at DogAboutTown.ca

The following is a warning to all humans and animals to avoid the blue green algae seen at both Beaver and Elk Lakes, as reported by the Times Colonist:

“A bright aquamarine goo that has turned up in Elk and Beaver lakes is believed to be a blue-green algae bloom and pet owners are being warned to keep their animals out of the water.

The weird water colour was first noticed Saturday afternoon near the Victoria Rowing Society boathouse by Saanich resident Dorothy Chambers who reported it to the Capital Regional District.

“It was such an unnatural aquamarine blue and it was gooey and thick,” she said.

Contact with a blue-green algae bloom is a concern for people as well as animals, said Chambers, who did some quick algae homework after her Jack Russell terrier threw up following a walk at the lake, even though he did not go in the water.

A Capital Regional District advisory, put out Monday, said the regional parks department is testing the water at Elk and Beaver lakes and will advise the public as soon as test results are known.

“Visitors are advised to avoid areas near the visible blue-green sheen, which appears as surface scum,” it says.

“Pet owners are advised to keep animals on a leash and prevent them from drinking or swimming in either lake.”

Websites on blue-green algae say it can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, throat and respiratory system and, if contact is made, the algae should be washed off with soap and water.

Caution is advised in eating fish caught in areas where there is an algae bloom and the liver and kidneys should be avoided.

Rhodo-Dogdom is definitely your small dog’s happy home away from home for daycare and boarding.

The business of doggy daycare and overnight boarding in their home is not a new concept to Shandon and Mario who previously had a thriving business in Vancouver.

“Although we just moved to Victoria in September, I lived in Victoria 30 years ago and we always intended to retire here. The at-home dog daycare and boarding is not new to us because we have been boarding dogs in our home for the past 14 years.”

In Vancouver, Shandon and Mario boarded and provided daycare for dogs of all sizes.

“We started the business because our 8 year-old daughter wanted a dog, but we were living in a rented house and didn’t want to make the long term commitment to a dog in case we had to move. I saw a local dog daycare and thought we could do better than that, so I set it up as my daughter’s business and that’s how we got started.”

Besides caring for dogs, Shandon is also an English teacher who tutors grades 5 through university level in English and Math through grade 10 in their Victoria home while her husband, Mario, is a retired musician who is about to get back into his music.

“Our family has always loved dogs and I wanted to be a vet when I was a little girl. Instead, I became an English teacher, and thought we could still provide an at-home daycare and boarding facility that dogs would really like, which we did in Vancouver for 14 years.”

Shandon and Mario have a lovely house, centrally located in Victoria with a fully fenced yard where their visiting dogs have a nice, big garden to explore and be entertained by the birds in the birdbath.

Shandon and Mario are a wonderfully warm, caring couple who are very happy to be able to continue to provide excellent daycare and boarding for smaller dogs, (no more than three at a time) and because they will keep their numbers small, they can also offer boarding and daycare for clients who may not be neutered or spayed.

Although they do have a few basic house rules, they go the extra mile to help out their clients.

“We like to be as flexible as possible for our clients, which means we often take in weekend boarding at the last minute, however, around seasonal holidays, it’s always best to book ahead as early as possible to avoid disappointment.”

Rhodo-Dogdom offers special savings of 10% to DogAboutTown members who use their services.

“The dogs have a really good time with us because we treat them like our very own – it’s like going to stay with favorite relatives at their second home.” – Shandon & Mario

It’s that time of year when all of humanity is bustling about racking their brains trying to find the perfect Christmas present, and often this means a furry four-legged friend may be purchased for the wrong reasons and brought into a home before the humans have really considered whether or not they can make the commitment necessary to provide a forever, caring home for a new family member that requires a lot of attention.

The following story posted by the Illinois English Bulldog Rescue is a very sad reminder of how many of our best friends do not end up in a loving home with caring humans, and I hope that this story helps humans to think clearly and ask the right questions before making the wrong choices for those who only need our love and understanding.

“I died today. You got tired of me and took me to the shelter. They were overcrowded and I drew an unlucky number. I am in a black plastic bag in a landfill now. Some other puppy will get the barely used leash you left. My collar was dirty and too small, but the lady took it off before she sent me to the Rainbow Bridge .

Would I still be at home if I hadn’t chewed your shoe? I didn’t know what it was, but it was leather, and it was on the floor. I was just playing. You forgot to get puppy toys.

Would I still be at home if I had been housebroken? Rubbing my nose in what I did only made me ashamed that I had to go at all. There are books and obedience teachers that would have taught you how to teach me to go to the door.

Would I still be at home if I hadn’t brought fleas into the house? Without anti-flea medicine, I couldn’t get them off of me after you left me in the yard for days.

Would I still be at home if I hadn’t barked? I was only saying, “I’m scared, I’m lonely, I’m here, I’m here! I want to be your best friend.”

Would I still be at home if I had made you happy? Hitting me didn’t make me learn how.

Would I still be at home if you had taken the time to care for me and to teach manners to me?

You didn’t pay attention to me after the first week or so, but I spent all my time waiting for you to love me.

I died today.” – Love, Your Puppy
