Rhodo-Dogdom is definitely your small dog’s happy home away from home for daycare and boarding.

The business of doggy daycare and overnight boarding in their home is not a new concept to Shandon and Mario who previously had a thriving business in Vancouver.

“Although we just moved to Victoria in September, I lived in Victoria 30 years ago and we always intended to retire here. The at-home dog daycare and boarding is not new to us because we have been boarding dogs in our home for the past 14 years.”

In Vancouver, Shandon and Mario boarded and provided daycare for dogs of all sizes.

“We started the business because our 8 year-old daughter wanted a dog, but we were living in a rented house and didn’t want to make the long term commitment to a dog in case we had to move. I saw a local dog daycare and thought we could do better than that, so I set it up as my daughter’s business and that’s how we got started.”

Besides caring for dogs, Shandon is also an English teacher who tutors grades 5 through university level in English and Math through grade 10 in their Victoria home while her husband, Mario, is a retired musician who is about to get back into his music.

“Our family has always loved dogs and I wanted to be a vet when I was a little girl. Instead, I became an English teacher, and thought we could still provide an at-home daycare and boarding facility that dogs would really like, which we did in Vancouver for 14 years.”

Shandon and Mario have a lovely house, centrally located in Victoria with a fully fenced yard where their visiting dogs have a nice, big garden to explore and be entertained by the birds in the birdbath.

Shandon and Mario are a wonderfully warm, caring couple who are very happy to be able to continue to provide excellent daycare and boarding for smaller dogs, (no more than three at a time) and because they will keep their numbers small, they can also offer boarding and daycare for clients who may not be neutered or spayed.

Although they do have a few basic house rules, they go the extra mile to help out their clients.

“We like to be as flexible as possible for our clients, which means we often take in weekend boarding at the last minute, however, around seasonal holidays, it’s always best to book ahead as early as possible to avoid disappointment.”

Rhodo-Dogdom offers special savings of 10% to DogAboutTown members who use their services.

“The dogs have a really good time with us because we treat them like our very own – it’s like going to stay with favorite relatives at their second home.” – Shandon & Mario

It’s that time of year when all of humanity is bustling about racking their brains trying to find the perfect Christmas present, and often this means a furry four-legged friend may be purchased for the wrong reasons and brought into a home before the humans have really considered whether or not they can make the commitment necessary to provide a forever, caring home for a new family member that requires a lot of attention.

The following story posted by the Illinois English Bulldog Rescue is a very sad reminder of how many of our best friends do not end up in a loving home with caring humans, and I hope that this story helps humans to think clearly and ask the right questions before making the wrong choices for those who only need our love and understanding.

“I died today. You got tired of me and took me to the shelter. They were overcrowded and I drew an unlucky number. I am in a black plastic bag in a landfill now. Some other puppy will get the barely used leash you left. My collar was dirty and too small, but the lady took it off before she sent me to the Rainbow Bridge .

Would I still be at home if I hadn’t chewed your shoe? I didn’t know what it was, but it was leather, and it was on the floor. I was just playing. You forgot to get puppy toys.

Would I still be at home if I had been housebroken? Rubbing my nose in what I did only made me ashamed that I had to go at all. There are books and obedience teachers that would have taught you how to teach me to go to the door.

Would I still be at home if I hadn’t brought fleas into the house? Without anti-flea medicine, I couldn’t get them off of me after you left me in the yard for days.

Would I still be at home if I hadn’t barked? I was only saying, “I’m scared, I’m lonely, I’m here, I’m here! I want to be your best friend.”

Would I still be at home if I had made you happy? Hitting me didn’t make me learn how.

Would I still be at home if you had taken the time to care for me and to teach manners to me?

You didn’t pay attention to me after the first week or so, but I spent all my time waiting for you to love me.

I died today.” – Love, Your Puppy

If you and your dog are having behavioral issues, the pound is not the answer.

Don and Jaime of Outbound Hounds have been in the pet business for over 2 years and are going strong. They are providing their dog walking service to the residents of Sooke and East Sooke and their Pet Care Overnight service is available from Jordon River to Victoria.

Don and Jaime decided to start Outbound Hounds because, as pet owners themselves, they wanted to pursue their interest in the pet care industry and meet like minded, responsible people in their living area.

Don and Jaime of Outbound Hounds have a strong business background and want to present a professional service to their community. Although they do advertise, they believe that word of mouth is always their best advertiser. They have Pet 1st aid, are insured, and bonded and have many references, and are also a member of the Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce.

The Outbound Hounds dog walking service is available Monday to Friday and they can accommodate requests for overnight pet service and visits through the weekend and holidays, with special requests always considered, too.

Outbound Hounds are open to receive phone calls from 8am-8pm Monday to Friday and are available by e-mail 24 hours.

Outbound Hounds asks that people give them as much notice as possible to avoid disappointment and wants everyone to know that they will always consider special requests, as they have additional staff to help accommodate if necessary.

Don and Jaime would like to thank all their Outbound Hounds clients for their continued business and support. “We appreciate all our dog and cat buddies and their lovely owners. We always love to meet new clients and hear about their pet stories.”

Are you looking for an at-home spa experience for your dog or cat? Perhaps you need look no further than the new Island Aussie Pet Mobile service which is the newest business member at DogAboutTown.ca.

Aussie Pet Mobile The Island has been operating on Vancouver Island since April this year (2011) serving the Greater Victoria and mid-Island areas from Nanaimo to Courtenay/Comox and all areas in between.

APM The Island is proud to bring their one on one, 15-step spa to your doorstep through their fully equipped mobile grooming service to your best friends so that they can enjoy a relaxing, comfortable experience in familiar surroundings.

Glenn Rubuliak, President and CEO of APM The Island, knows that many pets find going to the groomer, which involves being held in a cage or kennel, surrounded by barking, anxious, nervous dogs and then having to wait for their owners’ to pick them up, to be a traumatic and stressful experience for your best friends.

As well, often owners have very busy schedules which can make it difficult to find the time to arrange a trip to the groomers.

APM The Island is well equipped to solve both of these problems at once with their full service mobile spa that comes right to your door.

Aussie Pet Mobile The Island offers their service, including bathing, grooming, nail clipping, teeth brushing (not scaling), undercoat removal (de-shedding) & flea and tick treatment to all breeds, and cats too.

Glenn has been a business owner for over 30 years and currently owns two dogs and a cat and assures us that every groomer is trained to franchise standards so that all pets will enjoy a uniform grooming experience.

In order to avoid disappointment, make sure that you give APM The Island 5-7 days advance notice when scheduling an appointment and if you require a specific day and time, it’s always a good idea to book well in advance and/or on a regular basis.

If you’re a DogAboutTown.ca member, Aussie Pet Mobile The Island will offer you 15% off your grooming service to a maximum of $15.

Glenn would also like everyone to know that Aussie Pet Mobile The Island offers a convenient, reliable and efficient service to pet owners because they are dedicated to achieving and maintaining your pet’s well being. APM The Island uses environmentally friendly products and brings a highly organized, professional approach to mobile grooming.

“We pride ourselves on our innovative pet mobile design, heated hydrobath, and our Aussie Pet Mobile 15-Step Spa Grooming service which assures a complete and comfortable experience for each pet.” – Glenn

Dog Tired

“An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard; I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of. He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.

The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for several weeks.

Curious I pinned a note to his collar, ‘I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.’

The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar, ‘He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3 and he’s trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?’” – George Hammond

“To All the Dog-Loving people out there,

The 7th Annual Big Gay Dog Walk, hosted by the Victoria Pride Society and Vancity, will be held on Sunday, July 3rd, 2011 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. This year’s location is the same as last: Dallas Road near the bottom of Cook Street. Last year’s event drew hundreds of participants, as well as media such as the Times Colonist! Music, prizes, hot dogs, the doggie dress-up contest and the agility play-area gave people and their dogs a fun day in the sun! This year’s event is sure to be even bigger and better!!

For those of you who have not previously participated, this is a fun-filled event whose key principle is to bring people and their dogs together within the community. For those of you who have participated in the past, we’d like to welcome you back with open paws!

If you are unable to attend but would like to make a donation (in product or otherwise), we will gladly utilize your generosity during our “Doggie Costume Contest” or during our numerous Pride Week events.

Have you ever wished you could walk your dog to the local corner grocery, or stop in a store for a few minutes and find your dog still there when you come back? I know I have.

Dog theft is on the rise, which means most of us owners would never consider leaving our dog(s) unattended, even for a minute while we pop into a store, and with summer on it’s way, we certainly won’t be leaving our best friends inside a hot vehicle, either.

With the new GoldiLock locking leash, you and your best friend(s) have options…now you can take that camping trip, walk to your favourite store or outdoor market and safely lock up your dog in a shady spot, safe from traffic, knowing he/she will still be there when you come back.

This Vancouver-based, all Canadian company brings you a wide variety of fun colours (black, blue, green, red, teal, purple or pink) to choose from (Boris loves his fire engine red one), and a size that will fit even the tiniest Yorkie (YorkieLock), so what are you waiting for, now you can go anywhere, safely and in style with your best friend(s).

The other upside of the GoldieLock, of course, is that it will get you out walking to your errands, making both you and your dog healthier while producing zero carbon emissions, making the GoldiLock an ultimate green choice for our stressed environment.

Asia, at K-9SuperHeroes.com recommends this new locking leash for your best friend(s) and has negotiated a special 15% savings for dog whispering clients and DogAboutTown.ca friends, so be sure to send an e-mail asking for the special coupon code, when you order your GoldiLock.

Now, get out there and enjoy these wonderful summer days with GoldiLock and your best friend(s) at your side and don’t forget to ask for the special savings code.
